This course explains basic microeconomic theories and concepts to better understand issues in the healthcare sector. It first describes how the market for health and healthcare services are different from those for other goods and services, with a particular emphasis on the role of government and market failure. In addition, it discusses the theoretical and empirical aspects of key health economics issues, including the demand for health and healthcare services, supply side concerns, health insurance, financing and payment systems, total spending on health, pharmaceutical industry and drug pricing, economic evaluation of healthcare technologies, and finally equity issues in health and in the use of healthcare services.
